Tipping in Azerbaijan: A Traveler's Guide to Etiquette
Tipping culture in Azerbaijan is evolving. While it wasn't common in the Soviet era, the tourism boom has made it expected in many places. Here is how to navigate it without overpaying or being rude.
1. Restaurants & Cafes 🍽️
The "Service Charge" Trap
Before you tip, CHECK THE BILL.
Many restaurants in Baku (especially touristy ones) automatically add a 10% to 15% Service Charge.
- If Service Charge is included: You do NOT need to tip extra. However, leaving small change (rounding up) is polite.
- If NO Service Charge: A tip of 10% is standard for good service.
- Cash vs. Card: You usually cannot add a tip to a credit card payment. Always carry small cash (1, 5 AZN notes) to leave on the table.
2. Taxis 🚕
- Apps (Bolt/Yango): Tipping is not expected, but you can add 1-2 AZN in the app if the ride was great.
- Traditional Taxis: Round up the fare.
- Example: Fare is 3.40 AZN -> Give 4 AZN and say "keep the change."
- Example: Fare is 9 AZN -> Give 10 AZN.
3. Hotels 🏨
- Bellhops/Porters: 1 - 2 AZN per bag.
- Housekeeping: 2 - 5 AZN per day (leave on the pillow).
- Concierge: 5 - 10 AZN if they secure a hard-to-get reservation for you.
4. Tour Guides & Drivers 🗺️
- Private Guide: 10 - 20 AZN per day is a generous and appreciated tip.
- Group Tour Guide: 5 - 10 AZN per person.
- Driver: 5 - 10 AZN per day.
5. Other Services 💇♂️
- Barbers/Hairdressers: Round up or add 10%.
- Spa/Hammam Attendants: 5 - 10 AZN (often expected in traditional hammams).
- Gas Station Attendants: 0.50 - 1 AZN if they pump your gas and clean your windshield.
Summary Table
| Service | Tip Amount | Notes |
|---|
| Restaurant | 10% | Check if service charge is included! |
| Cafe/Bar | Round up | Leave coins |
| Taxi | Round up | Not mandatory |
| Hotel Porter | 1-2 AZN/bag | Standard |
| Tour Guide | 10-20 AZN | For a full day |
Golden Rule: When in doubt, 10% is always safe. And always have cash!
