Renting a Car in Azerbaijan: Driving Rules & Tips
Renting a car gives you the ultimate freedom to explore Azerbaijan's mountains and villages. But is it safe? And what are the rules?
Requirements to Rent 📋
- Driver's License: Your domestic license is usually accepted if it has Latin characters. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is highly recommended to avoid issues with police.
- Age: Minimum 21 years old (some companies require 23 or 25).
- Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of driving experience.
- Credit Card: For the security deposit (usually 200-500 AZN).
Where to Rent 🏢
1. International Chains (Avis, Hertz, Europcar)
- Pros: Reliable, newer cars, full insurance.
- Cons: More expensive.
- Location: Airport and city center hotels.
2. Local Companies
- Pros: Cheaper, more flexible with deposits (some accept cash).
- Cons: Older cars, variable service.
- Recommendation: Check reviews on Google Maps carefully. "Aznur" and "Karavan" are reputable locals.
Cost:
- Economy (Hyundai Accent/Kia Rio): 40-60 AZN/day.
- SUV (Lada Niva/Kia Sportage): 70-120 AZN/day.
Driving Conditions 🛣️
The Good:
- Main Highways: Roads to Ganja, Sheki, and Gabala are generally excellent (paved, multi-lane).
- Signage: Signs are in Azerbaijani (Latin alphabet) and easy to read.
The Bad:
- Rural Roads: Can be potholed and unpaved.
- Driving Style: Locals can be aggressive. Overtaking on blind curves and speeding is common. Drive defensively.
- Animals: Watch out for cows and sheep on roads in rural areas!
Police & Speed Cameras 👮
- Speed Cameras: They are EVERYWHERE. Use Waze to spot them.
- Speed Limits:
- City: 60 km/h (sometimes 40).
- Highway: 90 km/h or 110 km/h.
- Police Stops: If stopped, stay calm. Police are generally polite to tourists. Do not offer bribes. If you committed a violation, ask for an official ticket.
Parking 🅿️
- Baku: Parking is difficult in the center. Look for underground garages or "parking men" (vested attendants) on streets. Cost: 1-2 AZN.
- Regions: Parking is easy and usually free.
Summary
- Should you rent? Yes, if you want to visit remote nature spots (Khinalig, Lahij). No, if you are only staying in Baku.
- Best Car: A crossover/SUV is recommended for comfort on bumpy roads.
- Navigation: Download Waze (best for police/traffic) and Google Maps (offline).
