Ultimate Packing List for Azerbaijan: What to Bring & Wear

What to pack for a trip to Azerbaijan? A seasonal packing guide covering clothing, electronics, and essential items for Baku and the mountains.

Ultimate Packing List for Azerbaijan: What to Bring & Wear

Azerbaijan has four distinct seasons and diverse terrain (from beaches to glaciers). Packing can be tricky. Here is your cheat sheet.

Dress Code: What is Appropriate? 👗

Azerbaijan is a modern but traditional society.

  • Baku: Very modern. Shorts, skirts, tank tops are fine for women. Men wear shorts in summer (though long pants are more common for locals).
  • Rural Areas (Sheki, Quba): More conservative. Avoid very short shorts or deep cleavage to avoid staring.
  • Mosques: Women need a headscarf (usually provided at the entrance) and covered shoulders/knees. Men need long pants.

Seasonal Packing 🌤️

Summer (June - August)

Hot and Humid (30°C - 35°C)

  • Light, breathable fabrics (linen/cotton).
  • Sunglasses & Hat (Sun is strong).
  • Sunscreen.
  • Swimsuit (for Caspian beaches).
  • Sandals.
  • Light cardigan (AC is strong indoors).

Spring/Autumn (April-May, Sept-Oct)

Mild but Windy (15°C - 25°C)

  • Jeans/Trousers.
  • T-shirts and long-sleeve shirts.
  • Windbreaker/Light Jacket (Baku is the "City of Winds" - you WILL need this).
  • Comfortable walking shoes.

Winter (November - March)

Cold and Windy (0°C - 10°C)

  • Warm coat (windproof is best).
  • Scarf, gloves, hat.
  • Thermal layers (if visiting mountains).
  • Waterproof boots.

Essentials 🎒

  • Passport: Must be valid for 3+ months.
  • Printed e-Visa: Keep a paper copy!
  • Power Adapter: Type C/F (European).
  • Power Bank: For long days out.
  • Medicines: Basic painkillers, stomach meds (Imodium), prescription meds.
  • Cash (USD/EUR): To exchange.

What NOT to Bring 🚫

  • Drone: Drones are strictly regulated. Unless you have a special permit (hard to get), it will be confiscated at the airport and stored until you leave. Do not risk it.
  • Armenian Souvenirs: Items with Armenian flags/symbols might cause issues at customs.

Summary

  • Key Item: A Windbreaker. Seriously, the wind in Baku is no joke.
  • Style: Baku locals dress well. Bring one "smart casual" outfit for nice dinners.
